Song Of The Day – 19 January 2017
Happy Birthday to an actual living treasure, Dolly Parton! One day I’ll make it to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. What an inspiration she is. With the Women’s March coming up in Washington in a couple of days, I think I’ll be rewatching Dolly, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin‘s feminist classic 9 to 5 this weekend in solidarity!
Bonus Dolly – another fave (and overlooked) gem from the ’60s, Dumb Blonde. Dolly is anything but!
Can we just take a minute to admire her hair and outfit, too? 😍
Jan 4th, 2017 – Heart Of Glass by Blondie
When I was a kid I thought Agnetha Foltskog from ABBA and Debbie Harry from Blondie were just sooooooo cool and beautiful because they had blonde hair, blue eyeshadow and super shiny, lip glossed lips. At the time I didnt know about Debbie Harry’s punk background or the cast of legendary characters she hung out with at New York’s underground club CBGB’s (Bowie, Iggy, The Ramones, Warhol, Television, Patti & Mapplethorpe…). I just thought she was the coolest.
Heart Of Glass was released 38 years ago yesterday. It was a massive hit, and one of the Blondie songs most people can name off the top of their heads if asked at a pub trivia night. It also reflected the disco culture from New York’s infamously glamorous Studio 54 that was becoming increasingly mainstream. All I knew at the time, when I saw this video on Countdown, was that it was beyond cool. My love affair with Blondie had begun.
This is a great (and short!) doco about the making of Heart Of Glass:
Jan 3rd, 2017 – Ramble On by Led Zeppelin
Today is the 125th birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien, writer of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and more. As it’s just after New Year’s, and I’m usually on holidays at this time of year, i go into full nerd mode with an annual LOTR trilogy film marathon (I’m up to the bit in Fellowship Of The Ring where they’re just about to meet Galadriel. Elves = swoon 😍 ).
Tolkien’s work has inspired a gazillion artists. Led Zeppelin were famous fans, and mentioned people, places and references from Middle Earth in several of their songs, including today’s Song Of The Day – Ramble On. It’s also my fave Led Zep song. Huzzah!
Happy birthday, Professor Tolkien 😃
Here are some pics of me getting my LOTR nerd on…
January 2nd, 2017 – Pablo Picasso by Modern Lovers
I’ve been re-binge-watching Narcos today (perks of being on holidays), and even though the focus of the series is legendary Columbian drug tsar Pablo Escobar, because of the random way my brain works, another Pablo popped into my head.
‘Pablo Picasso’ by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers has always been a fave. It still makes me smile when it pops up in Repo Man: “Pablo Picasso was never called asshole…”
Even though the song is from the early 70s, its woozy tone felt totally at home on the movie’s soundtrack with disillusioned 80s ‘f*ck you’ punk by Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Iggy Pop and more. Repo Man was set in the LA punk scene during Reagan-era America, notable for the rise of yuppies, Reaganomics, televangelists, conspiracy theory supermarket tabloids, the CIA meddling in Central America, Nancy Reagan’s ludicrously out of touch ‘Just Say No’ anti-drugs campaign and… cocaine. So, although seemingly tenuous, the two Pablos are linked in a way.
Oh, and Narcos is bloody brilliant too.
January 1st, 2017 – New Year’s Day by U2
I haven’t posted anything to my blog in ages – work and life kind of got in the way. So a simple way to keep it up is sharing a Song Of The Day each day, starting today, January 1st.
The songs i choose might be because they hold a special memory for that date, but more likely than not will just be because they’ve popped into my head for some totally random reason. My thoughts are very random!
Starting off with this classic, if cliché, song for the New Year. Early U2 stood out from their contemporaries and still sounds fresh. It was before the ‘Bono is a po-faced smug ranter’ thing took hold. I love their early stuff, and they’re the only band i ever slept out for tickets to see as a teen.
Happy New Year 😃x
